Buying a Bike

8 Questions You Should Ask About
Which Bike To Buy

If you are in the market for a new bike you already know that bikes aren't cheap so you should be sure to purchase the correct style of bike the first time. Bike buying can be serious business. Here are8 questions you should ask yourself before you buy a bike.

First you need to decide where you are going to use your bike. If you plan on doing serious off road riding you need to be looking at off road bikes like a mountain bike with front and rear suspension. If you are gong to be spending most of your time on paved streets you should not be looking at mountain bikes but rather a touring bike.

1. How far will you ride
I know it's hard to guess in advance but you must have an idea whether you'll be riding more or less than 10 miles. If you are going to be riding more than 10 miles forget a mountain bike. There are touring bikes that are much more comfortable and faster for long distance riding.

2. Will you be riding on paved streets or bike paths
If you're not sure exactly where you'll be riding but are just looking for a little exercise and leisure relaxation you might want to by what's called a hybrid bike. There not perfect at either off road or fast road rides but offer a middle of the road compromise.

3. Will you carry equipment
If you are going to be carrying equipment you need to be looking at touring bikes. You'll be much more comfortable and more stable if you purchase a bike designed to carry a load. Touring bikes have additional tour features not found on a mountain bike. They have a triple crank to accommodate smaller gears so they turn more slowly, and they come with eyelets on the frame designed to attach packs to.

4. Will you be riding with a child
If you'll be riding with a child that isn't up to your riding speed you have a couple of options. For a younger child that isn't ready to venture out on a bike you can add a pull behind cart to your bike. For a child that is old enough to pedal you could think about purchasing a tandem bike. These bikes are quite a bit more expensive but can be a great deal of fun. Either for you and a child or even you and a spouse, nice and cozy!

5. What type of seat tickles your fancy
Are you into comfort or design? Traditional bike seats might look pretty cool but they aren't very comfortable. The newer recumbent bicycles offer a high tech seat that eliminates sore butts and backs. The good news is a recumbent bike is just as fast as any road bike.

6. Is looking cool important to you
Are you one of those people that's got to look good as they peddle down the bike path? Well there is a bike for you. The new groovy cruiser looks a bit like the old Schwinn from your grandparents era, but it allows for all kind of fancy components and add ons. Believe me you'll look real hip riding down the road on this style bike!

7. How hilly is the terrain
What's the terrain like where you live or where you'll use your bike? Lot's of steep hills? You should look at sport bikes. Sport bikes a built with a road racing frame and a triple crank. By adding a triple crank you get lower gears, which translates to less work for you knees. It's an absolute must if you are overweight or already have bad knees. Overall these bikes have a much more comfortable ride than their counterparts.

8. Are you buying for an adult or teen
Who are you buying the bike for? For an adult? Then spend the money to buy a good bike that will last you for years and years. For a younger child? Buy middle of the road but not expensive because they are going to outgrow it. For your teen? Most teens are looking to use and abuse their bike and their indistructable bodies as well. A BMX or mountain bike is probably your best choice. Your not going to get away cheap with this style of bike but that's okay because the BMX bikes are built to take a beating.

Bike riding is a perfect way to get exercise and relaxation. A nice leisure activity that's good for your health and lets you see and explore the great outdoors. Answer these 8 simple questions before you begin to shop and you'll soon own the perfect bike for the activity you plan to use it for. Happy biking!
