5 Reasons Why To Cycle For The Benefit Of Your Health

You're a little out of shape, maybe packing a few extra pounds and you've been thinking about an exercise program but with not a lot of enthusiasm. Then someone suggested taking up biking. That tickled your fancy. After all, it is a great way to see some new things and get fit all at the same time. Here are 5 reasons why to cycle for the benefit of your health

1. Shed those extra pounds
Because cycling is low impact, it is an excellent exercise choice for anyone that is overweight. You probably already know how to ride a bike so you won't have to learn any new skills, and as an added bonus, it's fun! Start peddling and watch those pounds melt away. Remember start slow and work your way up to a healthy level of cycling. If you are severely overweight or have any other health issues you should check with your doctor before taking up cycling.

2. Good for the heart
Cycling is good for the heart. It will get your heart pumping at a rate that is equivalent to most aerobic exercise. Start slow and work your way up. A heartrate monitor is an excellent investment. It will allow you to be sure you stay within a healthy range and are not overworking your heart. It won't be long and you'll soon begin to notice changes in your heart's response to your exercise.

3. Lift your spirits
Cycling has a very positive effect on your mood. It can lift your spirits and improve your mood after a stressful day. It can also relieve depression, and reduce pms symptoms. It doesn't have to be an overly long bike ride, but of course, the longer the ride the more time your body and mind have to unwind and begin to relax. As a mood elevator, trails are a great place to cycle. The quiet sounds of nature away from the hustle and bustle of the day will very quickly work towards relaxing your mind, body, and spirit.

4. Improve overall strength and co-ordination
Cycling can have some indirect benefits to your overall health by increasing your overall strength and your level of co-ordination. In the big picture, this means you are less likely to have accidents that are a result of a trip or fall which can be seriously disabling. You are also less likely to suffer the minor aches and pains that can result when you work your body too hard.

5. Improve overall fitness
Cycling will improve your overall fitness level which will increase your stamina and mental alertness. You'll feel more energized, fatigue less easily, and remain less stressed. Your body will be able to carry out physical tasks more easily and for longer period of time without the muscles becoming fatigued.

Cycling is the fastest growing physical fitness activity. Not only are people returning to their bikes for some leisure activity, bikes have become a source of transportation to take one to and from work, school, or shopping. What more can you ask for? Cheap transportation, improvements to your health, and a great way to explore. We've told you 5 reasons why to cycle that will benefit your health. So what are you waiting for?
